The Christmas Story for Children
Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Mary. She lived in a small town called Nazareth in Galilee. Mary was a kind and gentle woman, and she loved God very much.
One day, an angel named Gabriel appeared to Mary. The angel told Mary that she was going to have a baby boy. The baby’s name would be Jesus, and he would be the Son of God.
Mary was surprised and a little bit scared. She asked the angel, "How can this be? I am a virgin."
The angel said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God."
Mary said, "I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said."
And the angel left her.
Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was also pregnant. Elizabeth was six months along in her pregnancy. When Mary greeted Elizabeth, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy.
Elizabeth said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?"
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months, and then she returned to Nazareth.
When it was time for Jesus to be born, Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. Bethlehem was the city where Jesus’s father, David, had been born.
When they arrived in Bethlehem, there was no room for them at the inn. So they had to stay in a stable.
That night, Jesus was born. Mary wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger.
There were shepherds watching their flocks in the fields near Bethlehem. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them. The angel said, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."
Then a multitude of angels appeared, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."
When the angels had left them, the shepherds said to one another, "Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, lying in the manger.
When they saw him, they spread the word about what had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
The shepherds returned to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
